art and craft in wood as practiced by a Dermatologist

My first wood carving on the way to practising wood craft

The Dragon

The art and craft of wood carving as a hobby is a most rewarding experience. You start out with a rough wooden block of any shape. Give it a contemplative look from all possible angles, trying to visualize what can be created out of it and suddenly out of the blue it strikes you like a thunderbolt!

YES! This is it! This is what has been sitting inside the wooden block since the day it was cut off from a tree. Or, perhaps even before that; sitting here and waiting for you to bring it out! And so it starts: You pick up a sharp tool and begin the process of carving and slowly the thing inside starts coming out under the guidance of the caresses of the sharp tools and the loving touch of your finger tips.

And finally when the thing materializes and you hold it in your hands, you are on the top of the world! The pleasure of creating something beautiful, which comes out of your own imagination, with your own hands, that too , a piece of beautiful art work, is most wonderful. It can be compared to the ultimate pleasure of creation and that is giving birth to a baby!

With my short experience of one year in the art and craft of wood carving, I have formulated a rhyme which goes like this:

“ For Perfect Carving,

        Besides Sharp TOOLS,

     WOOD & MOOD

 Have To Be GOOD!”

Good wood means any wood which is neither too hard nor too soft. For me it has been the locally available  teak wood which has been giving the best  results. One  more  important  thing in  choosing a  piece of  wood is the grain of the fibers; they should be preferably uniform and lie along the length of the  wood  carving  you  have  in  your mind.

A  few words  about   tools: I started out with one chisel and a hammer that was  available in the house and now have  bought  a full set of  carpentry over the last one year. You keep on buying  the necessary tools as and  when the need  arises. The most important thing in wood carving is the sharpness of the tools. You have to sharpen your chisels daily and keep them in perfect shape.

About the MOOD; I think good mood  is  essential  for any  creative  work;  especially  something like  wood carving  where you  cannot  afford  to  make any mistake; as it is irreversible! But with my short  experience I have  found that after a good carving is done even the darkest of the MOOD can turn GOOD! Such is the pleasure of wood carving!
